Emotional Regulation

Occupational Therapy for emotional regulation in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, supporting children through sensory integration, movement and nervous system regulation.

Emotional regulation challenges can show up in many ways. Your child may experience big feelings over small moments, become overwhelmed by change, struggle with transitions, or find it hard to calm their body after frustration. You might notice after-school meltdowns, shutting down when things feel too hard, explosive reactions, or emotional fatigue that impacts friendships, learning and daily routines.

For many parents, this feels confusing and exhausting. You know your child is trying, but their reactions can seem intense, unpredictable or out of proportion. It may feel like you’re walking on eggshells, unsure whether the trigger is sensory overload, emotional overload, or something deeper happening in their nervous system. You may also see how sensitive they are underneath the big behaviours — and want the right support to help them cope with their world.

Emotional regulation difficulties are often linked to how a child’s sensory system, motor foundations and nervous system process information. Factors such as sensory sensitivities, developmental patterns, reflex integration, postural control, interoception, executive functioning and environmental demands can all influence how easily a child can cope, shift gears or return to calm.

At Integrate & Regulate OT, support for emotional regulation focuses on helping the body and brain work together so children can feel safe, organised and more in control. Therapy may include sensory integration strategies, movement-based regulation, grounding and proprioceptive input, co-regulation strategies for parents, and practical tools that build emotional capacity. We also look at how school, routines and expectations influence overwhelm — and work with families to make everyday life feel smoother, safer and more predictable.

If your child’s big feelings are impacting home, school or confidence, body-based Occupational Therapy can support regulation, resilience and emotional growth.
